Cyber Warfare and Global Politics
Cybersecurity Awareness Month
With just two weeks remaining until the U.S. presidential elections, history reminds us that this period is often rife with disinformation and cyber threats, with different state actors attempting to influence the digital landscape. In recent years, political tensions between major global powers have intensified, and the cyberspace has been turned into a covert battleground for espionage and the disruption of critical infrastructure in different countries.
During this political season, we’ve seen state actors attempting to manipulate public opinion and disrupt democratic processes. Major global powers, particularly Iran, Russia and China, have been accused of deploying tactics to sow discord and polarize societies. These tactics often involve spreading deepfakes and disinformation across social media platforms, leading to confusion and influencing public perception. Given the events of 2020, it’s clear that American voters must have confidence in the electoral system. This underscores the critical importance of addressing these cyber threats effectively.
Critical Infrastructure
Beyond disinformation, the security of critical infrastructure has emerged as a major concern in the context of cyber warfare. Reports indicate that Iran-affiliated and pro-Russian cyber actors have gained access to, and in some cases manipulated, critical U.S. industrial control systems (ICS) in sectors such as food and agriculture, healthcare, and water and wastewater in late 2023 and 2024. This shifts the issue from a passive threat to one of national security.
We have to realise that these kinds of attacks are not merely acts of sabotage. These are stealthy, unregulated, and incredibly dangerous acts that are capable of bringing down the very systems/services that keep the country running.
What next?
Technology will continue to evolve, and this presents a double-edged sword. On one hand, advancements such as artificial intelligence and quantum computing will provide threat actors with the ability to deploy more sophisticated cyber threats, making them more difficult to detect and defend against. These innovations could enable more stealthy intrusions and more damaging attacks.
On the other hand, these same technologies can be harnessed as powerful tools for defense. AI and quantum computing can help improve cybersecurity measures, enhance threat detection, and fortify systems against potential breaches, giving nations and organizations the capability to better anticipate and respond to evolving threats. The key challenge will be ensuring that these advancements are used effectively for protection, rather than exploitation.
In response to this growing threat, countries are increasingly investing in cybersecurity, building alliances to share intelligence and coordinate defenses. The U.S. for instance, has partnered with NATO allies to strengthen their cybersecurity measures. This threat extends far beyond national borders, making international cooperation essential. By working together, countries can better defend against cyber attacks, exchange critical information in real time, and develop unified responses to potential threats. As cyber warfare becomes increasingly complex, these partnerships will play a crucial role in maintaining global security and resilience in the face of evolving digital challenges
Looking ahead, international cooperation and regulation will be essential in tackling these challenges. Confronting an unseen enemy in cyberspace demands highly advanced skills and expertise to stay ahead of evolving threats. To ensure the security of nations and critical infrastructure, global efforts must focus on creating robust frameworks for cybersecurity, sharing intelligence, and developing coordinated defenses.
Only through collaboration can we effectively counter the increasingly sophisticated cyber tactics employed by malicious actors, safeguarding both national security and the stability of democratic processes.
